SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT

One of the main issues in psycholinguistics is bilingual memory. As the field concerns the way bilinguals process the words in their memory, the more investigation is done in this field the more efficient would be the second language teaching methods. This study investigates the intra- and inter-lingual semantic priming in bilinguals of Farsi learning English. More specifically, it aims to study different proficiency levels (High and Low levels) in the target language. Therefore, two groups are involved in this study: the low proficiency group and the high proficiency one, each of which consists of 30 Persian-English bilingual participants that are given semantic primes (Farsi and English) and non-primes (Farsi) in three different cases. The participants of both groups took part in a lexical decision task. English target words were presented in 3 cases: once, preceding by its Persian prime, once by an English prime and finally by its Persian non-prime. RTs in each case in both groups are measured. This study reveals the way the lexical information is activated across different proficiency levels. The results show that, low proficiency participants mainly rely on their first language information while recognizing the word in the second language. On the other hand, high proficiency participants are more autonomous and independent in their second language and, for them, first language information is not active during second language lexical recognition.
