Muḥammad Arshad al-Banjārī (1122-1227/1710-1812), one of the best known ʿulamāʾ in twelfth/eighteenth-century in present-day Indonesia, was born in Martapura, South Kalimantan, and his nisba refers to 'Banjār', the predominant ethnic group of the region. He appears to have acquired a rudimentary religious education in his own village, probably from his father and local teachers, for there is no evidence that surau or pesantren (both local traditional Islamic boarding schools) existed in the region during this period.
