Introduction & Aims: Quick vocabulary acquisition can be attributed to a process called quick incidental word learning. The term, "quick incidental learning" (QUIL), has been used to refer to children's ability to acquire at least a partial meaning of a new word in contexts such as the story format without overt reference or prompt by adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of quick incidental word learning in preschool children with stuttering and its relationship with phonological awareness and phonological memory.Matrial & method: Subjects in this study were 40 children (20 children with stuttering and 20 children without stuttering) 5; 6 to 6; 6 year old who were selected by convenient sampling method. Children participated in three separate sessions. The nonword repetition task, phonological awareness task and quick incidental word learning tasks were performed. Children were indirectly confronted with the nonwords and its referents in story in quick incidental word learning task. Finally, the participants’ performance in learning nonwords was assessed using both naming and comprehension tasks. GEE analyses were conducted to examine between-group differences in naming, perception and exposure levels. Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference in the ability to name (β=-2.33, p=0.001) and comprehend (β=-0.82, p=0.02) in the assessment of quick incidental word learning between children with and without stuttering. There was significant correlation between the naming (r=0.57, p=0.01) and comprehension scores(r=0.55, p=0.01) with phoneme awareness ability and naming score with nonword repetition tasks with the scoring method 1 (r=0.51, p=0.02) in children who stutter. In the children who do not stutter, there was only a significant positive correlation between naming scores and phoneme awareness tasks (r=0.64, p=0.003). Conclusion: In general, there were significant between-group differences in naming and comprehension. In addition, the rhyme and phoneme awareness scores and nonword repetition in scoring methods 1 and 2 were able to predict naming scores. It seems that the effect of phonological awareness and phonological memory on quick incidental word learning depends on the demands of the word learning task. In addition, differences in word learning, phonological memory, and phonological awareness indicated that the phonological processing systems of children with stuttering may be impaired in combination with other factors such as motor, linguistic, and cognitive abilities. Keywords: quick incidental word learning, phonological memory, phonological awareness, child who stutter
