test in both proficiency levels and the metacognitive strategy training was more effective on advanced level learners listening performance in comparison to that of intermediate level learners. The implication of the study is that metacognitive strategy training should be incorporated into the regular listening teaching programs to help students become more effective listeners-test revealed that the experimental group performed statistically better on the post-test was administered to both groups in each proficiency level. The analysis of the test scores using t-test was administered to both groups of learners in each proficiency level. Metacognitive strategies embedded into the same listening course book were taught to experimental group in four sessions of training according to Vandergrifts (1997) strategies while other group didnt receive the treatment. At the end of the training, a listening post-five male participants were selected in each proficiency level based on their scores on a placement test given by the institute and the scores of their achievement tests in the previous term. In order to guarantee their homogeneity in listening and reading skills and in grammar, a test of English as a foreign language was administered to determine the proficiency level of the learners. Proficiency tests were prepared based on TOEFL tests for advanced level learners and based on New Interchange Passages placement and evaluation package for intermediate level learners. Those whose scores were less than 25 were omitted from the groups and finally 50 participants were selected in each proficiency level and were randomly assigned into two groups, a control group (n=25) and an experimental group (n=25).
