There is no doubt that listening comprehension is one of the most important skills of language learning. Without understanding or interpreting the heard or listened sentences, no one could convey her/his thoughts, and beliefs, and as a result wouldnt be able to use language effectively. This study tried to investigate the effect of textual cohesive reference instruction on listening comprehension of Iranian EFL pre university students. In this quasi-experimental study, 50 students at pre-university (intermediate) level participated. The researcher divided them into two random groups. The groups consisted of one control group and one experimental group, 25 participants in each group. At first, a listening proficiency test was conducted to determined their homogeneity in listening skill. Then, a pretest was given to two groups, and their marks were used in order to measure mean and standard deviation to compare with subjects`posttest`s means and standard deviations to find out whether the subjects had improved. The control group received no special and useful instruction about the cohesive references while the experimental group received treatment which included the explicit instruction about the cohesive reference and its subdivisions. The results of study determined that instruction of textual cohesive reference helped the participants improve their listening comprehension significantly, although, the control group performed better in posttest than in pretest and delayed posttest was taken one month after first posttest to guarantee that the posttest results won`t change during the time and instruction effect is longitudinal. It could be concluded that cohesive reference instruction affect learning in a positive way and it could be used with different EFL learners to improve their listening comprehension.
