In this thesis, a new method based on model predictive control (MPC) has been proposed to control the power of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) in wind energy conversion systems. Various methods have been previously presented to control the active and reactive powers of DFIG. Linear controllers that have proportional-integral (PI) regulators are one of the most effective techniques that have a loop structure and therefore their bandwidth is limited. This limitation is considered to avoid overshooting in the system response. Consequently, this structure decreases the dynamics of the system, especially in high-power applications, where the switching frequency is low. To deal with these problems, advanced controllers have been suggested based on MPC, which have a reasonable performance compared to the conventional methods, but such methods have also disadvantages. The fundamental disadvantages of the MPC method are high computation burden, variable switching frequency, the need for an accurate model of the system for prediction as well as the need to select weight coefficients for optimizing the objective function. Practically, in some conditions, these challenges make it difficult to be implemented in real time. The main goal of this dissertation was to develop novel solutions to cope with the above-mentioned problems of the MPC method to use it for controlling the power of DFIG and facilitating its implementation practically. In the proposed MPC method, a two-stage idea was suggested to reduce the computation burden dramatically. In the first stage, a comparison algorithm has been used in the optimization structure of the objective function. This algorithm removes additional calculations in the optimization process and consequently, the calculations are finished faster. In the second stage, a discrete-time MPC with a finite control set (FCS-MPC) as well as variable sampling time has been proposed. In fact, in the new MPC structure, predictions are done with lower horizons while they have reasonable accuracy as well. Using the newly developed FCS-MPC, the behavior of the system is predicted for up to more moments compared to the conventional FCS-MPC, and calculations that do not have much effect on the result of the optimization process are directly omitted. To reduce the switching frequency in the FCS-MPC method, a new objective function has been suggested that includes the number of switching modes needed for each of the input control variables. In the proposed objective function, the number of required switching mode changes is added to the cost function with a proper weighting coefficient as a deterrent factor, to ignore some switching modes that do not have a great effect on minimizing the objective function. Furthermore, an FCS-MPC-SVM algorithm has been offered according to the spatial vector modulation (SVM) method to fix the switching frequency of the inverter. In this method, after minimizing the objective function, the corresponding optimal voltage value is selected as the reference voltage vector instead of selecting the optimal control input corresponding to the minimum value of the objective function. Then by calculating the duty cycle of each phase, the desired switching operation is accomplished through PWM. Finally, in case of increasing the prediction horizon, a weight vector sequence has been proposed for the appropriate selection of weight coefficients of the prediction objective function. By using the proposed weight vector sequence, the initial moments of prediction are more effective in deciding to minimize the objective function. To evaluate the performance of the proposed control technique, the whole proposed system has been simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. To investigate the effect of each of the proposed strategies on traditional predictive control, detailed comparisons with the details of control parameters were made in the simulation section. The simulation results have showed better active power tracking performance compared to conventional linear control methods. In addition, a decrease of 40% in the computation burden is achieved compared to classical FCS-MPC. Furthermore, by fixing the switching frequency with the proposed method, the output waveforms of DFIG have a higher quality compared to the VC-SVM method. Finally, experimental test is carried out by the hardware in the loop system (HIL). HIL is used to check the feasibility of the proposed control method in real time. In the proposed HIL system, a DSP28335 board is used as the main processor, a PCI-1711 board is usied along with PCLD8710 board as a hardware interface with the computer
