Many large-scale systems and plants are composed of several physically interconnected subsystems. A group of this kind of system is the systems in which the network topology among subsystems is not fixed and it changes, naturally or forcedly, in known or unknown times in prior, named as distributed switched large-scale systems in this thesis. Due to large computational burden of centralized controllers, this thesis proposes decentralized switched model-based predictive and distributed switched model-based predictive controllers for control of such a system. Based on modelling performed for such systems in this thesis, the interconnections of subsystems are considered as additive disturbances in dynamic equations of subsystems. So due to the switching signal affects the network topology and changes neighborhood sets of subsystems, the effect of switch is only reflected on disturbance vector. The proposed controllers in this thesis, on one side guarantee asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system and on the other side by employing the switch–robust control invariant sets as the terminal sets, they determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a control-law that guarantees constraint satisfaction in the presence of unknown topology switching. Two proposed methods of the current research, are applied on a distributed large-scale systems with switched topology and unknown switching times and the obtained results are compared with each other and with a centralized controller. Based on unknown switching signal and on this system, three different examples are considered. In the first example, it is assumed that the neighborhood sets after switch are known in prior. In the second example, it is assumed that the neighboring sets after switch are unknown in prior but sets of allowable neighborhoods are known in prior. In the third examples, it is assumed that the neighboring sets after switch are unknown in prior and also any sets of allowable neighborhoods are not defined for subsystems. A comparison of proposed methods on Example 1 shows that performance of decentralized and distributed controller are very similar to those obtained by the centralized controller. Also a comparison of decentralized and distributed controllers demonstrate that the decentralized controller obtains a better performance than the distributed controller on Example 1. Although it is expected that the distributed controller obtains a better performance than the decentralized controller, but it must be considered that if the interaction of subsystems include both of state and input terms, the employed decentralized controller can not be applied on such a system. Also the proposed decentralized controller can not be applied on systems with global constraints; whereas the proposed distributed controller can be applied on all kinds of systems with all types of constraints and interactions. Also since in Examples 2 and 3, the topology of system is not known in prior, so the mode of system is not known in prior and the centralized switched model-based predictive control can not be applied on them. In Example 2, performance of decentralized and distributed controllers are compared with each other. This comparison shows that the performance of the DSwMPC is better than the DeSwMPC. That is, the DSwMPC method, while has advantage of being applied on a wider variety of large-scale systems, performs better than the DeSwMPC method. In Example 3, the centralized control method due to unknown next topology and the decentralized control method due to excessive disturbance can not be applied. The distributed control methods can only be applied on this example. The obtained results clearly show the robustness characteristics of the distributed model- based predictive control, i.e. stability and constraints satisfaction, against unknown switching times and especially against unknown topology in the presence of strong interactions among subsystems.
