Tamtaman Nazluchay district of Urmia, with an area of 439.61 square kilometers, is located at 37°40′08″N 44°55′03″E, in the northwest of Iran, approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Urmia. During a field trip to the Tamtaman cave and its adjacent areas, we encountered high-tonnage rockfalls which originated from the foldings in the heights adjacent to the Nazluchay River of Urmia. The fallen rock blocks indicate some levels of dissolution and karstification, which can damage the historical monuments and the ancient cave in Tamtaman. Therefore, some surveys were conducted to investigate karst and its correlation with the region’s tectonic. The primary results showed that karst’s morphology and block rockfalls are more related to the dolomite-gray limestone formation. The most crucial karst forms of the region are skarns, pinnacles, dissolution and dolines channels, dissolution holes, karst springs, and caves that are spread along the cracks and faults, which indicate the relationship between these forms and the tectonic structures of the region. Then, using the Nikolaev Method and the Win-Tensor Software, the directions of the stresses were determined in seven regions (1-Nazlu Valley, 2-Qarre Nisa, 3-Tipak Valley, 4-Ghale Ismaeil Valley, 5-Noahi valley, 6-Tamtaman Valley, and Mir Davood and Asangaran Valley) by investigation of the slickensides of the faults and measurement of their slopes and extension. The general model of tectonic stress in the studied area showed that the direction of tensile stress is northeast-southwest, and the direction of compressive stress (maximum) is northwest-southeast. Tectonic structures such as the total joints show the direction of tensile stresses in the limestone units. Based on the field observations, the direction of the extension of the karst sinkholes in the studied area is northeast-southwest. To assess the developed karst regions and their correlation with the tectonic in the region, 14 effective factors in karst development were identified using the AHP Method and based on the conducted studies. These indicators include the height, slope, direction of slope, spring, waterway, lithology, (NDMI), (NDVI), (LST), dam, karst points, joints, fault, and displacement layer prepared from the remote sensing. The data obtained from the remote sensing were investigated, and using the AHP extension in the GIS, the comparisons were made to produce the karst development zoning maps. The results of karst zoning showed that out of the total area, 6.68% is classified under the highly under-developed class, 15.64% is classified under the under-developed class, 42.50 under the typically developed class, and 35.18% underdeveloped class. In the Tamtaman region, the lithological and tectonic factors of the region are the most weighted and essential factors controlling the karst development potential. Based on the tectonic-karstic map of the studied area, which is produced by integrating the geomorphological, geological, and remote sensing data. The dispersion and extension of the karst forms are not the same in all spots in the Tamtaman region, which is indicative of the difference between the tectonic phenomena and the degree of purity of limestone. Therefore, the lithology of the formation, alongside the performance of the tectonic processes, has led to the dissolution and creation of joints and fractures in the stones and developed the conditions for the formation of not-very-developed forms of karst. Then, the tectonic model of the foldings, the extension of the valleys, the extension of the sinkholes, the slope and forms of the karst effective in rockfalls, and the cave holes extension were calculated using the field data and the Win-Tensor software. The results indicated that the dominant extension of the folding vectors in the studied area is northwest-southeast, with their slope being 35-40 degrees in the northeast direction. The remaining extensions are in the northeast-southwest direction, with their slope being 45-50 degrees in the southeast direction. These foldings are formed along the tensile stresses. The dominant direction of the valleys in the studied area is northwest-southeast, with folded and highly tectonized valleys. A few valleys are formed in the direction of the tensile stresses and the normal faulting of the region. These valleys are of the karst type, and the development of the karst on the tectonic bed has led to block rockfalls. Based on the extension model and slope of the karst forms effective in the rockfalls, including the pits, karst corridors, horizontal skarns, and dissolution holes inside the limestone fabric, block rockfalls are primarily seen in the place of cross joints and cross karst holes, most of which have a slope between 20 and 40 degrees. Therefore, the rockfalls occur in areas with low slopes of streams or karst holes (unlike the topographical slope, which is high) if they cross and are influenced by the compressive stresses applied by the faults. For the preparation of the rockfall risk map in the studied area using the AHP method, and based on the previous studies, 14 effective factors in rockfall were identified using the AHP Method and based on the conducted studies. These indicators include the height, slope, direction of slope, spring, waterway, lithology, (NDMI), (NDVI), (LST), rockfall points, karst points, joints, fault, and displacement layer prepared from the remote sensing. The data obtained from the remote sensing were investigated, and using the AHP extension in the GIS, the comparisons were made to produce the rockfall zoning maps. The results of rockfall zoning showed that out of the total area, 1.81% is classified under the very high risk class, 1.96% is classified under the high risk class, 1.67% under the usually class, 1.23% in the low - risk class and 0.46 is a very low - risk class. The tectonic factor had the most weight and was the most important factor in rockfall. Based on the analysis of the tectonic-karstic models and maps of the region and the field observations, the land in this area has numerous holes. The development of the karst channels in the direction of the tensile stress and destruction of the channels relevant to the compressive stresses can be observed considering the strength of the rocks from the block rockfalls in the places near the faults. Therefore, the rockfalls are more due to the tectonic process on the developed karst bed, and rockfalls merely due to karst development on the tectonic bed have rarely occurred in some spots, including the pocket valleys and the area around the Tamtaman Cave.
