AbstractGroundwater vulnerability assessment systems have been developed to achieve a suitable method for protecting groundwater resources from future contaminants. According to the land use map of the Ardabil and Qorveh-Dehgolan plains, agriculture is one of the significant activities in these plains. Using fertilizers and pesticides causes nitrate to enter the groundwater, increasing pollution potential. As a result, it seems necessary to identify zones with high pollution potential and prepare the vulnerability map of groundwater. The DRASTIC approach is the most well-known method for groundwater susceptibility assessment. This model calculates the vulnerability index of the aquifer based on effective parameters of depth to the water table, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, unsaturated zone characteristics, and hydraulic conductivity. After creating all layers, the vulnerability maps were prepared by overlapping the layers in the GIS. The DRASTIC vulnerability index was obtained from 63 to 160 for the Ardabil plain and 39 to 146 for the Qorveh-Dehgolan plain. According to the results, the Ardabil plain was divided into two vulnerability classes (low and moderate), and the QDP was divided into three vulnerability classes (very low, low, and moderate).Considering groundwater contamination is a complex process, and hydro-climatic processes are often associated with ambiguity, so developing a model that controls this uncertainty is necessary. Fuzzy logic has been widely used in the last few decades to describe complex systems because of its capacity to deal with the uncertainty of the processes. Despite the widespread application of the classic fuzzy logic concept, it is critical to talk about the confidence and reliability of the analyzed information. For example, the decision, which was accepted based on low-reliability data, tends to be useless or even harmful to practical usage. The classic fuzzy logic theories can partly reflect such uncertainty and can not fully overcome the existing uncertainty in the calculations. In contrast to the classic fuzzy logic, which does not discuss the confidence and reliability of data and information, Z-numbers consist of restraint and reliability and have significant potential to describe the uncertainty of human knowledge. This study applies the concept of the Z-number as a new generation of fuzzy logic to predict the specific vulnerability of the aquifers. To highlight this approach, the DRASTIC parameters (inputs) and nitrate concentration values (output) were used in two scenarios to predict the specific vulnerability of the Ardabil plain and the Qorveh-Dehgolan Plain (QDP). The findings were compared to the results of the traditional FL. The analysis of the results indicated that the ZBM, in comparison to the classic fuzzy approach, improved the quality of results by 152% (using seven inputs), 284% (using four inputs) in the Ardabil plain, and 227% (using seven inputs), 411% (using four inputs) in the QDP. Generally, considering an event's reliability, the Z-number approach can be used in various aspects of water resources management, such as decision-making and vulnerability assessments.
