During the last three decades, using teleoperation systems has improved immensely due to its numerous applications. These systems broaden human ability to perform a task in a real or virtual environment that is too remote or too hazardous to be in. Telemedicine, tele-space and telesurgery can be mentioned as other applications of teleoperation systems. A typical teleoperation system consists of slave, master, communication channel, operator and environment. These systems can be controlled in unilateral or bilateral mode.Due to dynamic interaction among slave manipulators as well as communication latency, control of such systems is particularly challenging. Performance and stability of bilateral teleoperation control systems are adversely affected by variations in environment dynamics and time delay in communication channel. Prior relevant research in the literature has mainly yielded control algorithms that sacrifice performance in order to guarantee robust stability. In contrast, this thesis proposes methods to deal with these two main problems in order to maintain the stability without compromising performance. Two main contributions that will be discussed in this thesis are analysis of the stability of the system and relevant control strategies to enhance trade-off between stability and performance. Under conditions that will be considered, various control schemes will be introduced and their characteristics will be reviewed. Teleoperation systems are subject to various disturbances such as uncertainties in dynamic and frictions. Pervious works have considered dynamic uncertainties without any general attention to kinematic and parametric uncertainties. Waiver of these uncertainties can lead to immersive errors in the position and force tracking. We presented a nonlinear adaptive algorithm to cope with uncertainties in the dynamics and kinematics of a teleoperation system. Also, a modified nonlinear adaptive algorithm will be presented for the four-channel architecture. The stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed and the convergence of the position and force tracking errors are discussed.Given the wide acceptance of surgical robots in recent years, we will focus on them in this thesis. Telesurgery is one of the most important applications of teleoperation systems. In these systems human intelligence and its skills mix with the accuracy and repeatability of robots to access to sensitive parts of the body. It will be shown that using slave-master systems not only can solve lots of traditional surgical problems but although can improve accuracy, repeatability and configuration workspace.Tremor of master's hand is one of the main problems of surgical systems. We consider it as a constant bounded disturbance and try to reject it with using discontinuous Lyapunov-based controlleIn telesurgery systems, thin links with cables inside them can affect the flexibility of links and joints. Many factors are involved in performance of surgical systems such as design constraints, complicated surgical maneuvers or components matching problems. We consider all of them as holonomic and non-holonomic constraints and introduce a new method to practical design of grasper for laparoscopic surgical system. Also with considering proper cost function, a new method will be presented for optimal steering of non-holonomic surgical robot. For each of the proposed controllers and theoretical presentations, numerical simulations results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the methods to provide a stable and transparent relationship. At the end, simulation results will be compared with experimental studies that demonstrate the proposed approaches are highly effective in all phases of a teleoperation task, i.e. in free motion and in contact with rigid environments
