The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of Black clergywomen who have achieved leadership positions in the Black church. This qualitative study examined the leadership journey of eleven Black clergywomen leaders using a series of semi-structured narrative interviews that uncovered their experiences. The narratives collected through these interviews focused on the individual stories and experiences of Black clergywomen and the meanings they gave to these experiences. This study provided insight into their personal paths to leadership and how they have managed to crack the stained-glass ceiling. The findings showed that Black clergywomen do experience barriers based on Black church culture rooted in race, gender, and class oppression and reflected in written as well as culturally implied doctrinal limitations. Black clergywomen have made strides in leadership, otherwise known as "cracks in the stained-glass ceiling." The experiences of Black clergywomen showed both the positive and the negative aspects of women's experiences in church leadership.
