The number of adolescents participating in aerobic physical activity is decreasing. Participation in aerobic physical activity is important for overall health and adolescents' parents or guardians have an affect on the level of participation. The purpose of this study was to provide more insight into the importance of establishing physical activity habits at an early age and the role parents or guardians play in influencing a child's aerobic physical activity behaviors. A mixed-method study (N=68) was conducted with a convenience sample of high school students in Grades 10 through 12 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Z-transformation of skewness and Z-score of kurtosis were used to test for normality to establish appropriateness of parametric test. The Pearson product-moment correlation was conducted for correlation analysis. To test the statistical significance of the unstandardized regression coefficient, linear regression was used. The statistical significance of each predictor was tested using binary logistic regression. For content analysis, the researcher read and coded the data for major themes or concepts. There was found to be a significant effect of parent or guardian aerobic physical activity on adolescent aerobic physical activity for both the number of aerobic physical activities completed and the frequency of participation. Adolescents who reported having married parents, self-reported significantly higher number of days of physical activity for 60 minutes during the past 7 days and significantly higher number of days of physical activity for 20 minutes during the past 7 days, compared to adolescents who reported having parents who were not married. Adolescents reported more positive than negative influences when parents or guardians participated in aerobic physical activity with them.
