The distinctive architecture of Mosul represented an essential part of the city's cultural heritage, but almost all examples of the most important early architecture were deliberately destroyed in 2014-7 by radicals of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS, ISIL, Daesh). From an archaeological perspective, Mosul has always been overshadowed by its more famous ancestor, Assyrian Nineveh, situated on the opposite bank of the Tigris.
