Başhoca Isḥāq Efendi (d. 1251/1836) was Chief Instructor of the Mühendiskhāne-i Berrī-i Humāyūn (Imperial School of Engineering) and a pioneer of modern science in the Ottoman world. He was born into a Jewish family in the town of Narda (Arda) in Janina (Ioannina) in Greece. He and his brother Asʿad, who later became treasurer (defterdār) of the imperial army of Rumelia, both embraced Islam at a young age and came to Istanbul. Given his knowledge of Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian, and classical logic it is presumed that
