Bahcat Muṣṭafā Efendi (1188-1249/1774-1834), an Ottoman chief physician and poet, was born into a family of the Ottoman intellectual aristocracy and educated in the medrese in Istanbul. His maternal grandfather was a chief physician. He learnt Latin and Italian from Yaḥyā Nācī Efendi (d. 1239/1824), interpreter of the imperial council, and progressed in the customary ʿilmiyye ( ʿulamāʾ -class) career.
