Ayvalık is a small town located on a peninsula in the gulf of Edremit, on the northern Aegean coast of Turkey. Although settlements in antiquity were located on the nearby islands to the west, extant historical sources offer scant evidence of Ayvalık's existence prior to the eighteenth century. Piri Reis (Pīrī Re'īs) does not mention it in his Kitab-ı Bahriye (Kitāb-i Baḥriyye , c. 1521).
