The Arabic term amr , literally "command," is used in the Qurʾān and ḥadīth with a wide range of meanings ( EQ, index vol., amr ). In connection with God it may mean (cf. al-Iṣfahānī, 29f.; Baljon, 9ff.): God's "well considered, purposeful arrangement" of His creation (e.g., Q 10:3, 65:12); the continuous "providential rule" of His creation (e.g. Q 7:52, 10:31, 30:25); the guidance of people through His "command(s)," "injunction(s)," "decree(s)" (e.g., Q 21:73, 45:17f.) which are
