Alaşehir , "the multihued town," is a city in western Anatolia (in the Aegean region of present-day Turkey) that lies about 120 kilometres east of Izmir, at the foot of Bozdağ Mountain (ancient Mount Tmolus). Founded under the name Philadelphia by the Pergamene king Attalos II Philadelphos (r. 159-38 B.C.E.), it played an important role in antiquity and the Byzantine period. The town was conquered by the Saljūqs in 1075 or 1076, but recaptured by the Byzantines in 1098. Thereafter, it served as a Byzantine border fortress
