Al-Akhṭal al-Ṣaghīr , Bishāra ʿAbdallāh al-Khūrī (1884?-1968), was a lyrical poet of considerable merit and a harbinger of poetic change in Lebanon. He received a mixed education at al-Ḥikma school, where he studied Arabic and French literatures. He then worked in journalism, founding, in 1908, his own paper al-Barq , which became an important platform for literary change. His poetry reflected both classical continuity and romantic aspiration. Some of it was tied to public life, composed for formal, mainly nationalistic occasions. Other poems, while maintaining a
