The National Museums in Nigeria is believed to have come into being due to the colonial administration's quest to curb the outward flow, pilfering and looting of Nigerian works of arts, which was popularized by different expeditions of trade, explorations, revenge, conquest and religious indoctrination by the Western and Arabic worlds prior to the onset of colonialism. The colonial administration established the museums mainly for aesthetic and educational purposes and to feed the foreign curiosity about Nigerian art. However, the twenty-first century society expects more from museums, which are expected to play crucial roles in the political, economic, social and cultural development of the society. How then does the national museum meet these expectations and remain relevant in the twenty-first century Nigeria? Answering this question is the focus of this research. The research investigated the origin of National museums in Nigeria and how they have evolved during the constant changes of administration in the country, most of which were military dictatorships. The research sought to analyze the different roles played by the early originators of the museum movement in Nigeria, the ideas behind the setting up of the museum, what changes had occurred by 2010, the terminal date of this study, and what can be done to put it back on track. The research therefore established that the National Museums in Nigeria have evolved into government appendages with little or no interest from the public who are supposed to benefit immensely from its exhibitions, and that such exhibitions should be built to address some societal ills and lapses. Primary sources consulted for this research included newspaper publications, the Department of Antiquities archival documents, published notes by some of the originators of the museum movement in Nigeria, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) annual reports, policy document and news bulletins. Books, journal articles, reports and online publications were also consulted extensively to give a clear view on the origin and evolution of the National Museums in Nigeria.
