Pressure injuries represent a growing threat to patient health that can be physically, emotionally, and financially devastating. The incidence rates in intensive care units varies between countries which ranged between 2% to 50%. Nurses play a crucial role in preventing these injuries if they have proper attitude, motivation, and knowledge. The purpose of this study was to use the theory of planned behavior to understand ICU nurses' behaviors regarding pressure injury preventions in Saudi Arabia. Using a cross-sectional design, we distributed surveys to 162 ICU nurses working at three types of hospitals in Saudi Arabia. Using hierarchical multiple regression, demographic and theory of planned behavior variables (attitude, social pressure, PI knowledge, intention, and perceived barriers) significantly explained the frequency of performing PI prevention, R2= .18, F(10, 106) = 2.38, p= .014. We found that perceived barriers negatively explained frequency of performing PI prevention (β= -0.26, p= .009). PI prevention training (β= 0.17, p= .066) and social pressure (β= -0.20, p= .066) tended to explain the frequency of performing PI prevention. ICU nurses' attitude, knowledge about PI, intention, and perceived barriers were significantly different based on hospital types. In conclusion, reducing the number of barriers is necessary to increase ICU nurses ability to perform PI prevention more frequently.
