In modern times, biblical and theological studies have come to focus on Jesus Christ as a historical figure as part of stressing his full humanity. And many of these projects construe their proposals as fundamental critiques of and alternatives to orthodox Chalcedonianism, seeing the tradition's construal of the hypostatic union as inherently incompatible with Jesus' full humanity. While I agree that the tradition has had a tendency to functionally occlude Jesus' full humanity, I do not consider this a result of Chalcedon's fundamental logic and theological judgments expressed in the Chalcedonian Definition. Instead, I see this as a tendency promoted by the council's acceptance of Leo's Tome and with it, the longstanding tradition of accounting for the supernatural manifestations in Christ's life with reference to the Logos' divine nature. And by doing so, the council would effectively obfuscate the pneumatic dimension of Jesus' identity and work, which is essential to preserving the full biblical portrait of Jesus' human life as the Spirit-anointed Messiah of Israel.
