This exploratory research on social and economic factors associated with the growing problem of adolescent female delinquency in Saudi Arabia is set within the context of a country which has undergone a rapid period of social change in the past fifty years. Oil revenues have enabled the country to modernize rapidly, bringing many benefits to its citizens. But this has also resulted in migration from villages to expanding cities and towns, and the support and authority of the extended tamily has often been lost. Within the expanded cities many of the new, internal migrants have had to live in poor quality and overcrowded housing, with few of the social supports which were previously offered by the extended family. An important research question is posed: is the growing incidence of delinquency in young males and females associated with social problems associated with these rapid social changes?
