SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT

Keywords: ultrasonography, deep cervical flexor, forward head posture Background and purpose: One of the most common postural disorders in contemporary societies is the forward head posture (FHP) that is associated with numerous musculoskeletal complications. Considering deep cervical flexor muscles attechment to the neck, it seems that it would be influenced by such a postural deviations. Although no study has been yet evaluated the role of FHP on this muscle. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the CSA of deep cervical flexor muscles in women with normall head posture and FHP Materials and methods: This study was a case-control study in which 18 female students (mean age; 24.53.3) with FHP and 18 female controls (mean age; 23.42.5) with NHP were participated in. CSA of deep cervical flexor muscles were measured at the level of thyroid cartilage using real time US while participants performed CCF test in supine position. The level of contraction rate calculated by a pressure biofeedback device. Result: There was no significant difference in CSA of deep cervical flexor muscles between Individuals with FHP and NHP during the 5- staged CCF test (P>0.05). In addition, no significant relationship was seen between the CSA of deep cervical flexor muscles in two groups on either side of the neck. In other words, CSA is symmetrical on both sides of the neck in both groups. Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, FHP did not impose any morphological change on deep cervical flexor muscles at the fifth cervical vertebral level. Although measurement of CSA of deep cervical flexor muscles in other vertebral levels is recommended for future studies.
