SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
The loss-of-excitation (LOE) condition of a generator in a power system may be caused by faults or unexpected problems in the automatic field voltage control in synchronous generators. A reliable LOE protection scheme is required to detect it as quickly as possible while remaining secure in the face of other system disturbances. Nowadays, most LOE topologies depend on negative offset mho-type impedance relays, these methods have a low speed in LOE detection which may affect systems' stability against disturbances or stable power swing (SPS). In this thesis, we will be trying to improve LOE detection by finding alternative methods which depend on generator output quantities. The proposed method in our research is using multiple criteria in the decision index the derivative of output voltage, the derivative of output reactive power, the derivative of stator current Id, and the derivative of stator current Iq. Then we calculated the signal energy for each index for 1ms windows to determine threshold values to apply to the algorithm. The proposed method was able to separate clearly between LOE and reactor switching and determine the affected parameters to set the trip signal to the LOE relay. Using four parameters gives a comprehensive image of the changes in the system and prevents wrong tripping during stable power swings in the system.
