SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
This research is designed to focus on one of the major features and techniques of narratology, the postmodern technique of unreliable narrator, incorporated artistically by the well-known novelist, Dennis Lehane, in The Shutter Island. Being adapted by Martin Scorsese, in his film by the same title, the renowned director’s challenging, independent and controversial style has been reflected on the novel, detectable within every frame of the film. The purpose of this study is to use critical and literary theories of narrative, in order to analyze how Shutter Island is narrated by an unreliable narrator, and then argue critically, the ways Scorsese has contributed to the unreliability of the main character in the movie through his aesthetic incorporation of directing techniques, from behind the lenses of film theories, including extra-textual factors that have led to the production of such a prestigious movie. A critical exploration is undertaken of the environment in which Scorsese is immersed, as an area worthy of being explored since it plays a major role in the ways he produces his films, as an independent filmmaker. By the application of the major theories on the film’s textual, extra-textual and cinematic aspects, it is intended to represent the ways the readers have to rely on one of the most unreliable narrators of contemporary literature, reborn through the medium of cinema. Finally, it is hoped to draw the reader's attention to the connection that could be established between the incorporation of an unreliable narrator, the burden he brings on the shoulders of the reader and socio-cultural purposes behind such a kind of representation by the author of the novel and the director of the movie, Shutter Island.
