SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
This study is an attempt to survey a Deleuzean understanding of desire as pre-individual, impersonal, asubjective flows and virtual intensities and affects functioning and operating on a level beyond the reach of repressive forms of power, authority and law in selected works of Thomas Hardy. It can be used to examine Hardys works especially the way his characters violent, explosive and vibrant emotions- especially love and sexuality- function in the face of restrictive social norms and in the complex context of relations with the loved one, others in the community, the physical environment, and the patterns of the characters behavior and life. Hardys characters engagement with love, sexuality and desire as affect, intensity, virtulaity and a productive and creative force that eludes strategies of capture of any kind (be it social or familial triangulation of Oedipus) and their exploration and experimentation with their life, specially their desire is surveyed in a postmodern context. This thesis uses theories and concepts from Deleuze and Guattari to explore the parallels and connections and possible divergences and contrasts between the work of Thomas Hardy (primarily his novels) and postmodern thought especially focusing on issues of desire and individual subjectivity. Discussion about Hardys idea of the Immanent Will and its relation to and possible reconciliation with a postmodern and Deleuzean outlook is one of the considerable findings of this study. Desire, in Hardys works, is machinic and has the capacity to form free multiplicities and flee the categorizations and identity grids imposed by society. Individuals who escape habitual patterns of behavior and opinion can unfold their power in concert with the intensities of a present that incites open-ended becoming. Hardys protagonists are capable of such a process of distend[ing] lines of deterritorialization and escaping from fixed, stable and pre-established definitions of the self.
