One of the most typical and crucial academic writing skills for L2 learners is summary writing, It is a complex activity that requires students to paraphrase and reorganize text. It also encourages a deeper engagement with a text through rereading as students construct a summary in their own words. This study intended to investigate the effect of topic familiarity on Iranian foreign language learners summary writing. Its aim was to find out whether there was any significant effect on learners summary writing performance with regard to topic familiarity. The participants of the study were 40 female intermediate Iranian EFL learners, who were given treatments for different processes used in summary writing. After each session of instruction, four passages with different familiar or unfamiliar topics were given to learners in order to summarize. Two passages had familiar topics; they were related to Iranian culture so the learners had sufficient background knowledge about them. The two other unfamiliar passages were related to foreign culture, with no preexisting knowledge on the part of the learners. The collected summaries were analyzed by the use of Cronbachs alpha, Paired Samples t-test and other statistical tools. Finally according to the statistics analysis, it was revealed that learners written summaries were significantly affected by topic familiarity. Familiar topics by the activation of learners schemata facilitated their understanding and helped them to outperform in summarizing familiar topics than unfamiliar ones. In other words, learners familiarity with Iranian culture and their prior knowledge of the content facilitated learners reading comprehension as well as their summary writing performance. The result can provide second language teachers with appropriate criteria so that they can improve learners writing skills by providing various writing strategies according to learners needs and being flexible in selecting teaching techniques, as adhering rigidly to a specific approach will not solve all the forthcoming problems of the learners.

منظور از خلاصه نویسی ،درک و نوشتن مفاهیم و نکات اصلی و اساسی یک متن است .در خلاصه نویسی بایستی چهارچوب تعریف شده ای رعایت گردد تا خلاصه نویسی ارائه شده از لحاظ آکادمیک معتبر و قابل استفاده باشد .بنابراین زبان آموز در این حوزه صرفا بایستی بر موضوع و رشته تخصصی متن آشنایی لازم را داشته و از سوی دیگر با فن تلخیص نیز آشنایی کامل داشته باشد تا بتواند شهد موضوع را با بیانی شیوا و روان و با جملاتی کاملا پیوسته از لحاظ معنایی پیاده سازی نماید .هدف از این تحقیق بررسی تاثیر آشنایی با متن نوشته بر چگونگی خلاصه نویسی زبان آموزان است .فرضیه مورد نظر این بود که آشنایی با موضوع متن تاثیر مثبتی بر خلاصه نویسی زبان آموزان خواهد داشت .برای اثبات این فرضیه ابتدا 40زبان آموز مونث با روشهای مختلف خلاصه نویسی آموزش داده شدند و پس از اتمام هر جلسه، متنی با موضوع آشنا و یا ناآشنا با فرهنگ زبان آموزان برای خلاصه کردن به آنها داده شد .در پایان طبق تجزیه تحلیل آماری تاثیر مثبت آشنایی با موضوع متن بر نحوه خلاصه نویسی زبان آموزان به صورت چشمگیری ثابت شد .یافته های این تحقیق نشان داد آشنایی با موضوع متن با فعال سازی الگوی موجود در ذهن زبان آموز به توانایی نوشتاری او کمک کرده و تاثیر به سزایی بر خلاصه نویسی دارد .نتیجه به دست آمده معیار مناسبی برای مدرسان فراهم ساخته است که طبق آن مهارتهای نوشتاری زبان آموزان را تقویت کنند
