SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
This study intended to investigate the comparative effect of two different pre-reading activities, namely the activation of the topical background knowledge and pre-teaching of vocabulary, in isolation and in combination, on Iranian high school EFL learners reading comprehension. There were three groups consisting of 35 participants which led to an overall of 105 participants. After the groups were found to be approximately homogeneous in terms of reading comprehension by means of the Key English Test (KET), an attempt was made to randomly assign them to three experimental groups with different treatments. In the first group, named, the Activating Background Knowledge Group (ABK), the learners were taught reading comprehension through some activation of the topical background knowledge. Learners in the second experimental group, that is, the Pre-Teaching Vocabulary Group (PTV) were provided with pre-teaching of vocabulary, while the third group received a combination of both treatments. At the end of the treatment sessions, a reading comprehension post-test was administered to assess the participants reading comprehension, to see how effective the treatment had been in improving their reading comprehension. The research data were analyzed by means of three dependent t-tests to compare each groups pre-test and post-test mean scores, with the results indicating a significant improvement from the pre to post-test in terms of reading comprehension. Furthermore, the treatment groups were compared through an Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with the results favouring the combination treatment. Hopefully the results of this study will prove fruitful for those involved in various domains of English language pedagogy such as teachers, syllabus designers, teacher trainers, etc. Keywords: Pre-Reading Activities; Pre-Teaching Vocabulary; Reading Comprehension; Topical Background Knowledge.
