SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note

The knee is considered an important mechanical member of the human lower limb, which provides the flexibility of the legs. The knee acts almost like a simple hinge joint and causes the tibia to bend in relation to the femur. Bending and opening of the knee joint is done by two muscle groups, the hamstring and the quadriceps, which are located on the sides of the femur. Stimulation of these muscles by motor neurons causes their muscle activity and provides optimal movement in the knee. In many cases related to the diagnosis of knee abnormalities or evaluation of the muscles driving the knee, it is necessary to somehow measure the force produced by the muscles of these two muscle groups. On the other hand, the direct measurement of muscle force involves irreversible aggressive actions, which is practically impossible. A possible solution is to estimate muscle force by measuring the electromyography signal and using skeletal-muscle models to calculate muscle force. Therefore, in this thesis, a process is programmed in OpenSim software and its application programming interface is used in MATLAB software to estimate the muscle force of selected muscles from the flexor and extensor groups. The knee has been coded and implemented based on the experimental data of surface electromyography and knee angle. For this purpose, after reviewing the anatomy of the knee and the muscles involved in its movement, a skeletal-muscular model was customized in the opensim software in the sitting position. The muscle model in the opensim software is based on the Hill type model, and we adjusted the parameters of each muscle in our customized model based on valid measurements of recent years. The input of this model is neural stimulation signals, for which we use surface electromyography experimental data from a reliable database. In this data set, the electromyography signals of four muscles of the rectus femoris, latissimus dorsi, biceps femoris, and hamstring along with the goniometric signal of the knee angle from 11 healthy participants are available. After preparing the skeletal-muscular model and pre-processing the experimental signals, the model and data are called in the MATLAB software using the OpenSIM application programming interface. And the solution of a dynamic problem is directly followed in it. The output variables that are taken from solving the problem include the muscle force and tendon force of each of the mentioned four muscles and the knee angle. We use the knee angle comparison between experimental and modeling data to validate the model results and adjust the control parameters to match the two as much as possible. Finally, as an expected result, we have been able to estimate the muscle force of each muscle during the movement of bending and opening the knee in the sitting position, and in the next steps, we can use it to train an artificial neural network for direct mapping of the AM signal. We will use muscle power.
