Abstract: Public spaces in urban areas are considered an important asset for citizens. Urban parks are considered as physical environments due to meeting social needs and are actually considered to be one of the requirements of a modern city. In today's society, the development of urban green spaces has become an integral element in any urban planning. One of the basic demands of modern society is to have quality life in urban environments. For this purpose, the good management of urban landscapes will have a major impact on the development of a quality environment. In order to have beautiful preferred landscapes, the optimal criteria should be adopted based on people's preferences. Knowing people's preferences for urban landscapes will be a good guide for landscape management by designers and planners. The present research examines the relationship between people's background and the perception of plant species in an urban landscape with emphasis on the theory of cognition. For this purpose, a combined questionnaire including questions and pictures of native, semi-native and non-native species was given to 200 men. The results show that men have the most knowledge about the landscapes of Arsbaran and its native plants and they prefer these landscapes over other types. Men like native and semi-native trees, non-native shrubs and flowers of various origins in city parks. In addition, the results of the correlation analysis show that with the increase in the level of recognition of the species, the preference also increases. Also, significant differences are observed among age groups, income, education and different occupations in preference to the level of knowledge of species. Elderly men, who are in the age range of 50-60 years, have the least knowledge of semi-native and non-native plants. In relation to examining the amount of income, it is clear that men with an income level of 15-20 million have the most knowledge about all kinds of plant species with different origins. In addition, men with the least level of education have the least knowledge of native, semi-native and non-native plants, while people with the highest level of education have the most knowledge. Investigating the effect of job on the preference of plant species shows that people with private jobs like native and semi-native plants more than others. But regarding the marital status, married men have more preference for the use of native species in Tabriz city. . According to the age pyramid of East Azarbaijan province, middle-aged people will be the majority population in the coming years. Therefore, the design of urban parks considering the views of this age group will be important to respond to future needs. It is necessary to consider the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of users in the design of parks in Tabriz city. In addition, it is suggested that future studies evaluate the impact of all environmental factors and spatial arrangement on men's perception.
