Abstract Drought stress is one of the most important a-biotic stresses influencing performance of crop plants. Therefore, the identification or the development of tolerant genotypes is of high importance for incorporating in maize production. So, in order to study of water deficit effects on fourteen maize hybrids, a field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station of Tabriz University (Khalat pushan). Experimental design was split-plot based on randomized complete block design with four replicates. Main plots consisted of different levels of irrigation (well-watered, mild stress and sever stress) and hybrids evaluated as sub plots. Several agronomic, morphological and physiological traits were measured under control and stress conditions. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences between normal and stressed conditions for 300-grain weight, length of silk, plant height, ear length, inter-node distance, plant dry weight, ear diameter, cob diameter, number of grains per row, the amount of the leaves rolling, number of crown flowers, number of rows per ear and grain yield traits at (P<0.01) and also the depth of grain, grain width, crown length and number of leaves per plant at (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed between irrigation levels respect to the number of leaves in ear trait. Hybrids were significantly different for all the traits except to ear diameter. Hybrid x irrigation interactions were not significant for any trait. Mean comparisons showed that hybrid SC500 was the highest grain yield per plant. The best model for stepwise regression based on all studied traits at the average of conditions, indicated that four responsible traits such as the number of rows in the ear, 300-grain weight, number of grains per row and number of leaves per plan remained in model, which justified total 83 percent of the total changes in yield performance. Results of path analysis revealed that the number of rows per ear had the highest direct effect on yield, while the number of leaves per plant had the least direct effect on yield. The cluster analysis based on all studied traits and also yield separately, using Ward’s method grouped genotypes into three clusters. In all of hybrids SC700, SC704 and KSC705 grouped into Cluster I (as tolerant), hybrids SC500, K3647 x K18 and SC400 grouped into Cluster II (as sensitive) and the remaining genotypes into Cluster III (as moderately tolerant). Principle Component Analysis, based on all of studied traits determined two principal components that could justify the 78 percent of changes. Hybrids SC500, K3647 x K18 and SC400) had a relative advantage compared to the other hybrids subjected to the second component (yield agent). The SC500 determined such as high yield performance hybrid contrasting others. In both mild and sever water stress conditions, SC702, SC500 and K3647 x K18 were identified as the most tolerant hybrids subjected to TOL and SSI indices and based on STI, GMP and MP indices K166 x K18, SC500, K3647 x K18 and SC400 were more tolerant hybrids than others under both water stress conditions. These hybrids were able to produce optimum performance in stress conditions.
