The Astara metamorphic complex is located at longitudes of 48 52'30" east and 38 26'00 north. Thus area is a part of the Guilan Province of Iran. Outcrops of different sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks along two main traverses in the Latun water fall area and Khotbehsara area were studied in this research. According to mineral assemblages in the metamorphosed pelitic rocks, they were categorized as garnet-kyanite, plagioclase-bearing schists and muscovite and biotite schists. Then the metamorphic parageneses were determined. Using thermodynamic calculations in thus research and by the means of petrogenetic grid and THERMOCALC software, pressure and temperature condition of metamorphism was determined. The average temperature for the peak of metamorphism which crystallized kyanite was 600 C and the minimum of pressure was 7 kbars. The geothermal gradient was 30 C/km, indicating the Dalradian metamorphic gradient and a collision environment for the formation of these rocks. The stratigraphical relations in the Astara area show that the metamorphic rocks are older than Cretaceous. The most possible collision event before Cretaceous, creating these metamorphic rocks, was the closure of the Palaeotethys ocean and Pangea and Eurasia collision in Triassic. In this case, the metamorphic rocks of the Astara area are along the metamorphic and ophiolite-related rocks of the Palaeotethys suture of the adjacent areas including Gasht, Masal and Shanderman to the east and Allahyarlou to the west. More studies on the Astara metamorphic rocks can help to locate the Palaeotethys suture in Iran which runs from west of Turkey to the south east of Asia
