Zinc oxide based varistors are intelligent devices which exhibit non-linear resistances in response to the voltage insurgences. Therefore, they are potentially used as insurgent voltage protectors in electric and electronic circuits. Preparation of these varistors mixed with polymers (known as composite varistors) needs low economy, increases their mechanical strength and provides the possibility of preparing very thin varistors. Composite varistors possess lower opening voltages in comparison with ordinary varistors and are used in sensitive and lower voltage circuits to protect them from overvoltages. In the study of the electrical properties of varistors, after their initial cleaning whith alcohol, two sides of them were coated with silver past for the electrical contacts. Connecting the varistor to the corresponding circuit, the variation of current with the applied voltage and the effect of temperature on the I-V characteristics of the varistors were investigated.Effect of the frequency change of the applied voltage on the frequency dependent parameters (such as C,D,H,G and K) at different pressures were also studied. By investigating the variation of varistor conductivity with temperature, the activation energy of donor levels was evaluated. Experimental results show that, the amount of polymer used in the۱۳۶varistor structure influences the electrical properties of varistors and it is possible to achieve the required opening voltage and electrical properties by simply varying the quantity of polymer in the varistor structure.Experimental investigations indicate that increasing the percentage of polymer in the varistor structure leads to the following results:۱) As long as the nonlinear behaviour of the varistor is preserved the amount of polymer may be increased in the varistor structure.۲) The lower the polymer percentage, the lower is the opening voltage.۳) By increasing the temperature, the opening voltage is decreased, the rate of decrease becomes higher by reducing the percentage of polymer in the varistor structure.۴) Varistors having higher values of polymer, possess higher capacitance, dissipation coefficient and quality factor compared with other varistors, but their conductance is low which is independent of the frequency of the applied voltage and pressure.۵) Increasing the frequency of the applied voltage in a composite varistor, causes the capacitance and also dissipation coefficient to decrease but the conductance to increase
