It is generally accepted that the excessive use of fossil fuels has led to global warming and anthropogenic climate change due to the increase of greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 is one of the primary greenhouse gases which its increasing concentration in the atmosphere is currently the main driver for the development of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) technologies. Different methods have been used for reducing the amount of CO2 through which using of sorbents has attracted significant attention recent years. Among all sorbent materials, CaO has become as one of the major adsorbents to reduce the amount of CO2 because of its advantages including high porosity, great activity, low cast and also availability. However, CaO sorbent gets gradually inactive and loses its stability during CO2 adsorption process due to exposure under high temperatures in various cycles. In this regard, improving the stability and resistance of this sorbent is considered as one the important challenges. On the other hand, CaO is highly cohesive powder for which fluidization behavior is highly heterogeneous due to the formation of large and compact agglomerates that cannot be disrupted by a gas flow leading to a slugs and channels. Therefore, destabilization of gas channels which means improvement of CaO fluidization, leads to remarkable enhancement of the CO2 capture performance in the fluidized bed. In this regard, the main purpose of this research was modifying the structure and also fluidization behaviour of CaO sorbent in order to increase its stability and surface area of contact between gas and solid, respectively. The experiments indicated that the structural porosity of sol-gel made samples is rather more than the ones synthesized with wet mixing method, which leads to more stability of these sorbents against sintering. The sample prepared with calcium nitrate and aluminium nitrate as precursor and promoter, respectively, represented highest capture performance among all the sol-gel made sorbents. This sample preserved 71.63 of its initial capture capacity under real conditions after 21 cycles, whereas this value was about 36.5 for the pure CaO. The SEM pictures revealed that using aluminium nitrate instead of alumina; as the promoter, yields to a structure with more porosity which is still obvious in the corresponding SEM picture at the end of 21 cycles. Fluidization experiments showed that the synthesized CaO-based sorbents are classified in the category of hard-to-fluidize materials. However, using alumina and silica nanoparticles as auxiliary materials, generally, improves the fluidization behavior of these modified sorbents and consequently leads to a higher bed expansion. As an exception, adding hydrophilic silica nanoparticles to the sample synthesized with calcium nitrate as the precursor and aluminium nitrate as the promoter, didn't have any auxiliary impact on its fluidizability. This issue is attributed to the inappropriate coating of nanoparticles and sorbent particles over each other, which is clearly appreciated in the SEM photograph of this sample. Finally, taking TGA from the coated sorbents with nanoparticles showed that using alumina nanoparticles in order to improve the fluidity of sorbents has also improved their stability in the calcium looping process
