Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs)are considered as one of the most promising technologies in energy conversion field because of their prominent features such as having high efficiency and long-term performance sustainability and also because of their application in combined cycles to reach a higher theoretical efficiency. A comprehensive study about the real improvement potentialin fuel cell system will help the researcher to enhance the system and also the hybrid systems, in which the fuel cell operates as the base system. In the present work, a validation process has been initially done for the electrochemical model of fuel cell and then for proposed layouts of SOFC, energy, exergy and advanced exergy analyses have been carried out to determine exergy destruction rate of the system components, endogenous/exogenous and avoidable/unavoidable parts of the exergy destruction rate (first level splitting of exergy destruction rate) and different combination of the mentioned parts (second level splitting of exergy destruction rate). It should be noted that the mentioned analyses have been carried out for the first time. To this purpose, determining the best operating conditions, namely the unavoidable conditions, is one of the main priorities for the development of advanced exergy. Because of the lack of information on the unavoidable conditions of a solid oxide fuel cell, a comprehensive model has been developed based on empirical and theoretical studies, for predicting mass transfer processes combined with chemical and electrochemical reactions based on the microstructure of the electrode. Basically, in this model, electrodes act as reaction zones with the triple phase boundary (TPB). Porous electrodes are modeled in the form of a random packing consisting of electron particles for the transport of electrons, ion particles for ion transport, and cavities (gaps) for the transfer of gas species. The unavoidable conditions are selected by choosing the optimal properties of the microstructural properties of the electrodes and the electrolyte, such as the length of the TPB, porosity, tortuosity, the thickness of the anode, the cathode and the electrolyte, and the activation energy. Results show that, the energy and exergy efficiencies as well as the output power obtained under unavoidable conditions, could be higher than the corresponding values obtained under the real conditions, by up to 25 , 32 and 25 , respectively. It is also revealed that the exergy destruction under the unavoidable conditions could be 38 lower than the corresponding value under real conditions. Based on the results of advanced exergy analysis, the order of components for higher avoidable endogenous exergy destruction is: the inverter, the stack and the afterburner. This order becomes: the stack, the afterburner and the inverter when the results of conventional exergy analysis is considered. Therefore, relying on the conventional exergy analysis can be misleading. The results also show that the highest exogenous exergy destruction rate is calculated for the stack. This indicates that the stack performance is strongly dependent on the other system components. The avoidable exogenous part of the exergy destruction in the stack is significantly more than the unavoidable exogenous part. Therefore, more attention should be paid on the other system components to reduce the exergy destruction in this component
