SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
Text of Note
The behavior and effect of two fractal shapes, namely Koch curve and Apollonian circles as photoconductive antennas on near-field radiation characteristics within the terahertz spectrum is investigated. A LT-GaAs is used as the photoconductor for the antenna layer which has a short carrier lifetime but a low quantum efficiency. Fractal photoconductive antennas (FPCAs) are examined in four iterations (K1, K2, K3, and K4 for Koch curve and A0, A1, A2, and A3 for Apollonian circles). Koch FPCAs with iterations K1, K2, K3, and K4 reported E-field peak intensities of 177, 160, 182, and 229 V/m and resonant frequency of 1.7, 1.6, 1.55, and 1.55 THz, respectively, while Apollonian FPCAs with iterations A0, A1, A2, and A3 reported E-field peak intensities of 68.5, 99, 104.4, and 104.6 V/m and resonant frequencies of 1.142, 1.146, 1.144, and 1.150 THz, respectively. E-field was 1.3 and 1.53 times enhanced in the Koch and Apollonian FPCAs, respectively. Koch FPCA demonstrated a red-shift of 0.15 THz while Apollonian FPCAs reported no significant shift in the resonant frequency. It is also shown that generally the E-field and H-field in the near-field of the structures have been improved by exciting the electric and magnetic dipoles. In an overall overview, Apollonian FPCA demonstrated better enhancement and superiority over Koch FPCA. Thus, THz-imaging and spectroscopy can be performed with better sensitivity and detection using the proposed fractal geometries as FPCAs.
