Water is a necessity to sustain life, which is under serious threat with the expansion of industrial, agricultural and domestic activities. Heavy metals and dyes are among the dangerous pollutants of aquatic environments, and due to their complex nature, the analysis of these pollutants faces many challenges. There are many ways to treat water, but adsorption is one of the simplest, best, and most cost-effective ways to treat it. Low cost and high efficiency are the two main factors that determine the efficiency of the adsorbent for use in real systems. Activated carbon and chitosan are materials that have significant potential in adsorption applications. This study focuses on the improvement of adsorption properties by grafting chitosan onto activated carbon previously activated with phosphoric acid. The structural properties of the synthesized adsorbent were analyzed using SEM, FTIR, BET and Zeta potential analysis, which showed a significant improvement in chemical stability compared to the unmodified components. The ideal ratio for phosphoric acid in the activation of carbon and chitosan in the composite composition was reported as 50% by weight. In addition, the performance of the synthesized adsorbent in the removal of two pollutants, including methylene blue dye as a representative organic pollutant and Cu2+ ion as a representative inorganic pollutant, was studied. The effect of parameters such as adsorbent dose, contact time, initial concentration and solution pH in the adsorption process was evaluated and investigated. The adsorption mechanism of both pollutants followed the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the maximum adsorption capacity of single layer for methylene blue dye and Cu2+ ion were measured as 22.522 and 3.921 mg/g, respectively.
