SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
This dissertation is an empirical study in the field of literary translation to explore and try some applicable solutions for bridging the gaps between the literal translation and the implied translation of Trevor LeGassick, M. M. Badawi and John Redenbeck in The Thief and the Dogs by Naguib Mahfouz. This study focuses on LeGassick's translation of Naguib Mahfouz's well-known novel The Thief and the Dogs, investigates the problematic pragmatic, linguistic and cultural differences between the source text (ST) and the target text (TT) and finally tries to explore some valid solutions to bridge the gaps efficiently. It also highlights the significance of culture and the way cultures are introduced to the target readers by translating literary works properly. Since Naguib Mahfouz's novels and short stories reflect unique and complex features of both Arabic language and Egyptian popular culture and tradition, the translators who embark on translating any of his works need to have the required knowledge of the cultural, linguistic, pragmatic norms of the source and target culture and use strategies and techniques that can help them translate the implied messages and the real intent of the text. So, the difference between literal translation and implied translation play a big role in creating a gap for the reader.
