Since the beginning of the seventies of the last century, Indonesia has seen a renewal movement in the field of Islamic thought. This movement was characterized by new discretions in the field of jurisprudence and doctrine with some boldness exaggeration, and created an atmosphere of intellectual tension in Indonesian society. One of the most important pioneers of this innovative movement was Nurcholish Madjid, and perhaps one of the most important theses in his innovative project is his view on the historicity of Qur'anic text. This study aims to describe his view on the historicity of Qur'anic text, identify its sources, and determine its position in the map of contemporary Quranic studies in Indonesia. The researcher used the inductive method to deal with this subject, where he has collected and inferenced all the writings of Nurcholish Madjid and the traditional and contemporary scholars related to the subject. The researcher also used analytical and synthesis methodology to analyze the texts cited to get out of the expected results, in addition to using the critical approach to evaluate the view of Nurcholish Madjid on the historicity of Qur'anic text. Perhaps one of the most important results of this research is that Nurcholish Madjid has adopted the same concept of the historicity of Qur'anic text in general modern researchers in the Arab Islamic world, which is claims that the Qur'anic text is a historical text that belongs to a specific environment and culture, and for this reason, its indications has changed with the changing requirements of its new circumstances. Then, this vision made him call for the necessity of ijtihad and innovation in religious thought, and call for a reconsideration of certain things that have been fixed in the Islamic heritage since they do not match the social and political conditions in our current reality.
