Kufra is a group of oases in the Libyan Desert (eastern Sahara), which stretch from northwest to southeast for about 300 kilometres, between 24° and 26° North and 18° and 21° East. The oases together cover a surface of approximately 18,000 square metres, while the district of Kufra-which includes the oases and the surrounding desert and is the largest among the twenty-two districts in the State of Libya-includes more than 483,000 square metres, with an estimated population of around 40,000 people in 2012.
