ʿImād al-Dīn Ismāʿīl b. ʿUmar Ibn Kathīr was born around 701/1301 in the town of Buṣrā, on the outskirts of Damascus, into a family which traced its lineage back to the tribe of Quraysh. His father was a noted preacher (khaṭīb) , famous for his eloquence ( al-Bidāya , 14:31-3). After his father's death, and following in the footsteps of his brothers, while still young Ibn Kathīr moved to Damascus to begin his education, which included the study of Shāfiʿī fiqh with the famous jurist Burhān al-
