Bushire (Ar. Būshahr, Pers. Būshehr) is a port city and district in the 7th Ustān (Fārs) of Iran, lying on the Persian Gulf (28° 55'N, 50° 49'E). The city covers the northern end of a low-lying peninsula parallel to the coast and is connected to it by a causeway across an alluvial isthmus. The origin of the name is uncertain; a plausible suggestion is that it is a contraction of Bukht-Ardashīr, meaning "Ardashīr has given" (see Curzon, 2:231). Several supposed premodern mentions of Bushire, including
