Bhadreshwar (Sanskrit Bhadreśvar), a village on the Gulf of Kutch (Kachh), in Gujarat, is the site of the ancient fortified town of Bhadravati and was, from Vikrama Era (VE) 798/741 C.E., under the protection first of the Chavdas (c. 746 to 942) and later Chalukyas (c. 960 to 1243) and governed intermittently by a council of Jain merchants. It is probably the same as the Sūbāra recorded by the Persian geographer al-Iṣṭakhrī (d. 346/957) (Tehran, 147, 151; Cairo, 102, 104-5) and by the Ḥudūd al-
