Text of Note
Anṣār al-Dīn (defenders of the faith, Fr., Ançar Dine) was a northern Malian armed group formed in late 2011. Anṣār al-Dīn forged a jihadist coalition that controlled northern Mali from May 2012 to January 2013. The other members of this coalition were al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and an AQIM offshoot, the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJWA). In March 2017, Anṣār al-Dīn joined the AQIM subsidiary Jamāʿat Nuṣrat al-Islām wa-l-Muslimīn (group for supporting Islam and Muslims, or JNIM).
