Shaykh Maḥmūd Khalīl al-Ḥuṣarī (1917-80) was a reciter and scholar of the Qurʾān. He is known for the correctness of his reciting and was thus the obvious candidate to participate in a project initiated by the Egyptian Ministry of Religious Endowments in 1960 to broadcast the straightforward murattal style of recitation (which differs from tartīl , cf. Tadjwīd, EI2 ), freeing it from its teaching and private devotional contexts and promoting it as a style conducive to learning and memorisation (al-Saʿīd).
