A high population growth rate, increasing per capital income, increase in number of universities and influx of people from other parts of Nigeria have resulted in the generation of enormous municipal waste in Kwara State Nigeria, posing a serious threat to environmental quality and human health. This problem could be reduced by applying new techniques to model appropriate sanitary landfill sites in the area. Most of the waste sites in southwestern Nigeria are selected randomly and waste incinerated in air which has impacts on nature and human life. The study area falls within latitudes 7°59'40''N and 8°44'6''N and Longitudes 4°09'40''E and 5°14'8''E, an area of 9,592.60 square kilometers within the basement complex rocks of Nigeria. The aim of this research is to determine suitable landfill sites with less impact on the environment. Seven potential towns for appropriate landfill sites-two locations at Sokoto and one each for Malete, Oke Oyi, Jimba, Omu Aran and Ijagbo were investigated using Geographic Information System (GIS), Geological, Geophysical and Geotechnical techniques as tools to aid decision making processes. Gneisses are the most dominant rock types here. They occur as granite gneisses and banded gneisses with coarse to medium grained texture. Other rocks include quartzite, granite and migmatite. To achieve the objectives, 2017 IKONOS Satellite imagery was used to identify geological features, soils, topography, land use, road networks, rivers, surface water, infrastructure and settlement. Thirty seven vertical electrical soundings (VES) were conducted using the Schlumberger configuration. Three to four layers were observed: Top laterite (90Ω-m to 838Ω-m), clay (10Ω-m to 72Ω-m), weathered basement (65Ω-m to 690Ω-m), and moderate to fresh basement rocks (200Ω-m to 1150Ω-m). The overburden layers showed adequate thicknesses for clay as mineral seal and landfill construction material. Aeromagnetic survey lineament data indicate no major fault in the area. The particle size distribution curve showed that the soils were dominated by sandy clay (SC/CL) and gravelly sand (GP/SP). XRD result showed that the clays are predominantly kaolinitic. The liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index values of the soil range between 28% to 65%, 10% to 21% and 11% to 46% respectively. This implies the soils have medium to high plasticity. The coefficient of permeability ranges between 1.9x10⁻7 cm/sec and 7.4x10⁻7 cm/sec. Safe bearing capacity ranges between 275 KN/m2 and 888 KN/m2. Other geotechnical results such as compaction, CBR, specific gravity, firing and consolidation results met engineering characteristics of soil material An integration of IKONOS satellite imagery, geology, geophysics and geotechnical data were modelled with Environmental geo-spatial software in ArcGIS 10.3 environment using Analytic Hierarch Process. Weighted Linear Combination and multi criteria analysis in which criteria such as soil, distance from settlement, roads, land use, water body, rivers, water table, elevation, and slope were used after geo referencing, reclassifying, weighting of criteria, data overlaid and final suitability model map was developed. The seven sites fall into two categories: moderately suitable (Sokoto2, Malete, Jimba, Omu Aran) and not suitable (Sokoto1, Ijagbo, Oke Oyi) for sanitary landfills.
