In this paper, I am seeking to show the significance of the Nation of Islam in American society and the world. I will argue that the NOI played an important and necessary role for the era in which they were at their most influential and a role that continues in part to this day. The value they provided was in spurring a higher degree of self-pride and confidence in the mindsets of everyday African Americans. I will explain the origins of the NOI from an anthropological standpoint and their place in society during their heyday. Most important will be the links to that era in the present day's version of the NOI as embodied by a handful of active members of the Nation who live in Chicago, which is both the city of residence for the author as well as the headquarters for the NOI worldwide. Both literature and ethnographic interviews served as the main forms of research for this project.
