Background: Communication and social skills deficit is one of the main symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and lead to pragmatic language impairment. Also, Defecit in pragmatic language, executive functions and adaptive behavior are one of the most important factors in the emergence of communication and social problems in children with ASD. Considering the possibility of the relationship between these factors with each other, this study examined the relationship between pragmatic language, executive functions and adaptive behavior as well as the mediating role of adaptive behavior in relation between executive functions and pragmatic language. Method: In this descriptive analytical study, children with autism spectrum disorder were selected in convenience from the exceptional schools for autism in Tehran. Then their parents completed the Vinelad Adaptive Behavior Scale, Children's Communication Checklist and Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions. Pearson correlation test, Multiple Regression and analysis of variance were used for analyzing the data. Results: The results showed that there was a negative and significant correlation between executive functions with pragmatic language (r= -0/41, p<0/001) and adaptive behavior (r= -0/24, p=0/048). Also there was a positive and significant correlation between pragmatic language and adaptive behavior (r= -0/34, p= 0/004). Furthermore, there was a relation between executive functions and pragmatic language (r=-0/35, p=0/003) in the case of existing moderate and high adaptive behavior in children with ASD. Conclusion: Based on the observed correlation between executive functions, pragmatic language, and adaptive behavior in children with ASD, we can apply these results to design different intervention and training programs for promotion of executive functions in these children. It seems that we can use early executive functions training to prevent the pragmatic language impairments and maladaptive behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder. Key Words: Autism spectrum disorder, executive functions, pragmatic language, adaptive behavior.
