Multiple family behavior and interaction factors has important role in substance abuse and its prevention. Family factors influence and their effectiveness were studied to their importance. Attachment is one of basic concepts in Bulbys theory. He believed that attachment is one of primary needs and it isnt originated from another need. He emphasized on two important points of attachment; first, child is genetically prone to some reaction and second, attachment style is renewable. This comparative case control study was aimed to evaluate opium dependency and its relation with attachment style and parent loss under 18 years old. We aimed to determine attachment styles in opium dependent and non-dependent groups. Cases were all opium dependent persons who admit to Addiction Study center and had inclusion criteria, they were selected randomly. AAI questionnaire was used for evaluating attachment style. 17.3 cases lost one of their parents under 18 years old but this was 10.7 in controls. Mean age of parent loss was 11.6 4.4 year in cases and 12.1 4.8 year in controls. 29.4 of cases who lost their parents had secure attachment style, 41.2 had avoidant insecure attachment style and 29.4 had ambivalent insecure attachment style.33.3 of cases who hadnt lost their parents had secure attachment style, 36.5 had avoidant insecure attachment style and 30.1 had ambivalent insecure attachment style. 36.8 of controls who lost their parents had secure attachment style, 10.5 had avoidant insecure attachment style and 52.6 had ambivalent insecure attachment style. 38.6 of controls who hadnt lost their parents had secure attachment style, 34.3 had avoidant insecure attachment style and 27.1 had ambivalent insecure attachment style. This study showed that parent lost under 18 years old had been related to attachment style.
